The train is genuinely cheaper if you are travelling alone with one bag at a sensible hour. It stops being the obvious answer the moment you add a suitcase, a second person, or a 6am flight.
Getting from the Southern Highlands to Sydney Airport by train means the Southern Highlands Line to Campbelltown or Central, then a change onto the T8 Airport line, which charges a per-person station access fee at the airport. It is cheaper for one person but takes considerably longer than the 1 hr 40 min drive, involves changes with luggage, and does not run early enough for most morning departures.
The Southern Highlands Line runs through the main Highlands towns and connects to the Sydney network. To reach the airport you change onto the T8 Airport and South line, and the airport stations charge a station access fee on top of the normal fare, per person, each way.
Three things decide whether that suits you. First, total journey time, which is materially longer than the 1 hr 40 min drive once you include waiting for the connection. Second, luggage: you are moving your own bags across a platform change. Third, the timetable, which is the one that catches people out — early morning services do not get you to Mascot in time for a pre-dawn international check-in.
Check current timetables and fares with Transport for NSW before you rely on them; they change, and we would rather you checked than took our word for it.

Travelling alone, carry-on only, a mid-morning or afternoon flight, and you live within walking distance of a station. In that situation the train is cheaper and we would take it ourselves.
The transfer wins when there are two or more of you, when there are check-in bags, when the flight is early or the arrival is late, and when you would rather not be managing luggage across a platform change at the start of a holiday.
Yes, via the Southern Highlands Line and a change onto the T8 Airport line. It takes considerably longer than driving and the airport stations charge a per-person access fee on top of the normal fare.
For one person, yes. For a group, usually not: the train charges per head while a transfer from Bowral is $275 for the vehicle, covering one to two passengers, with modest step-ups for larger groups.
Generally not from the Highlands. Early morning services do not get you to Mascot in time for a three-hour international check-in, which is why pre-dawn departures are the bulk of our work.
